Douglas Smith Bungalows
At the same time as the launch of the Smith Trust, Douglas Smith bequeathed funds to develop six retirement bungalows in Haltwhistle. Residential priority would be given to former employees of Smith & Walton at a rent of 2s 6d per week.
At the official opening of the bungalows on 5th July 1963, a plaque was unveiled by the Duchess of Northumberland. The Duchess praised the work of Mr. Smith in bringing employment to the town in the 1930's and the prosperity of the firm led Douglas Smith to ‘build’ the bungalows. In 1963 Mrs F P Smith, co-founder of the Trust, sponsored the development of a further 4 bungalows.
