THE SMITH (HALTWHISTLE &
DISTRICT) CHARITABLE TRUST
EXAMPLES OF ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED BY THE TRUST
Since its inception the Trust has supported a wide range of charitable activities.
Several churches receive annual assistance, as do the activities of locally directed health charities and community groups. Sports clubs and a number of outdoors activities have benefited, and small capital projects are supported.
Below we provide a few examples of activities we have assisted.
South Tyne Churches

Churches of the South Tyne
Since its inception, The Smith Trust has supported places of worship for all denominations in Haltwhistle and the surrounding villages. Douglas Smith and his mother were regular attendees at the Church of the Holy Cross, Haltwhistle, and St Cuthbert’s, Beltingham. The latter contains a stained-glass window, dedicated to the memory of Douglas Smith, by the artist Leonard Evetts. Support for many of the local churches is via annual subscription but requests for small capital projects, such as hymn books and pews have also been supported; additionally contributions are made to larger projects, such as roof repairs. The South Tyne area is covered by the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, and one of the trustees is an appointment of the Bishop of Newcastle.
